“I Am the Upstander”

Six poems written by students in Michele G.’s Courageous Cubs class for Pink Shirt Day.

I am the upstander,
I wonder what the bully is afraid of,
I hear angry targets,
I see the bullies run of,
I want this to stop,
I am the upstander.
I pretend that when I finish this mission I will save the school,
I feel lucky to fight of bullies,
I touch the targets shoulder to make them feel better,
I worry that this will never stop,
I cry the targets are getting bullied,
I am the upstander.
I understand that I will save the school,
I say this will stop,
I dream of a land with no bullies,
I try to stop this,
I hope that this will finally stop,
I am the upstander.

I am the upstander,
I wonder why the bully is is being mean to the target,
I hear the sounds of the kids crying in fear,
I see all the fear and sadness on the target’s face,
I want to help the target and bully get along,
I am the upstander.
I pretend I am fearless,
I feel the courage and sadness raging out of my body,
I touch my inner self, my courage and the target’s heart,
I worry my friends won’t join me,
I cry of joy and love for helping a friend,
I am the upstander.
I understand how it feels to have fear and sadness,
I say this is not the right thing to do, please stop,
I dream of a world of my own were the word bully did not exist,
I try to make the bullying stop,
I hope the bullying will stop and all will be happy,
I am the upstander.

I am the upstander,
I wonder why the bully is having bad thoughts about the target and being
so mean to them,
I hear the selfish things going on and the sounds of kids getting heart physically or emotionally,
I see myself stopping the mess that is going on,
I want to help the target and the bully because they both are getting heart somehow,
I am the upstander.
I pretend that I can fly away from this.
I feel bad for the people in the fight,
I touch the targets heart,
I worry that something bad is going to happen,
I cry of love because I have made a person feel good about itself,
I am the upstander.
I understand what is going on,
I say that this is not right so please stop,
I dream of a world of my own where everyone is always happy,
I try to help my friends,
I hope that I can do it,
I am the upstander.
