“I Am the Bystander”

Six poems written by students in Michele G.’s Courageous Cubs class for Pink Shirt Day.

I am the bystander,
I wonder if the target is O.K
I hear bullying
I see bullying
I want no bullying
I am the bystander.
I pretend their is nothing
I feel bad
I touch my deep side
I worry the target will get hurt
I cry because i don’t know what to do
I am the bystander.
I understand the target
I say in my head i don’t know what to do
I dream i will be the target too
I try to not get involved
I hope he doesn’t get hurt
I am the bystander.

I am the bystander,
I wonder if the target is ok,
I hear that the target is in a fight,
I see that the target is getting bullied,
I want The bully to stop,
I am the bystander.
I pretend that everyone was okay and the bully was gone,
I feel sad for the target,
I touch my heart ,
I worry that the target is heart,
I cry about that didn’t help the target,
I am the bystander.
I understand that the target was hurt,
I say I don’t want to be involved,
I dream that I help,
I try to not get involved,
I hope he is ok,
I am the bystander.

I am the bystander,
I wonder if there hurt
I hear things
I see people
I want to make it stop
I am the bystander.
I pretend i don’t see anything
I feel them
I touch them
I worry for them
I cry for them
I am the bystander.
I understand them
I say please stop
I dream of them to stop
I try to talk it out
I hope they stop
I am the bystander.

I am the bystander,
I wonder what will happen
I hear the cries from the target
I see the bully threatening the target
I want to go help the target
I am the bystander.
I pretend I don’t see anything
I feel the cold wind breeze through my soul
I touch my heart and say I need to help him.
I worry that the target will not be ok
I cry when I hear the whimpering sound of the target
I am the bystander.
I understand that the target is scared and nervous
I say to myself that I can help him
I dream that the target will be ok
I try to force myself to help the target and stand by him
I hope the target will be ok
I am the bystander.

I am the bystander,
I wonder if I should move
I hear the fear in the target’s soft voice
I see the bully threatening her until she gives in with fear
I want it all to stop
I am the bystander.
I pretend not be in the situation
I feel sad inside and I know how the target feels
I touch my face thinking I need to help her but don’t want
to be bullied
I worry about if the target is hurt
I cry when the target cries of pain
I am the bystander.
I understand how the target feels
I say in my head I should help her but then something stops me
I dream of a world without bullies
I try to tell myself to help her but also to stand by her
I hope the bully will stop
I am the bystander.

I am the bystander,
I wonder if the target is ok,
I hear the bully being mean to the target,
I see the upstander standing up for the target,
I want the bully to stop being mean to the target,
I am the bystander.
I pretend that everyone is ok and the bully was gone,
I feel bad for the target,
I touch my heart,
I worry about the target and the upstander,
I cry because the target is crying,
I am the bystander,
I understand the being a bystander is not the right thing to be,
I say I want the bullying would stop,
I dream that the bullies were gone and everyone was happy,
I try to help but I can’t,
I hope the bully will stop and the target will be happy,
I am the bystander.
