Village School

Food 4 Thought

By Amilia, Village School Parent

You may have been confused when your child came home on Thursday, October 25th with a bag full of produce. No, you didn’t forget about a class field trip; this time the field trip came to Village!

Food 4 Thought, LLC, a Bay Area company that brings high quality, fresh produce into schools to help students eat healthy and learn better, set up shop in our Village courtyard to host a Farmer’s Market. All classes participated in a short lesson about the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, after which they got an opportunity to “shop”. With such a huge selection of produce from which to choose, students’ bounty was limited only by their budgets — $2 each — although some of our future salespeople honed their negotiation skills to cut a deal!

This annual event checks so many boxes… I was delighted to see students choosing new or unfamiliar fruits, weighing the value of one choice over another, and doing mental mathematics to determine just what they could afford. More than that, the excitement on everybody’s face at dismissal, when students got to present their treasure trove of fresh produce to mom or dad, was priceless!
